Flight downgrading: your rights

Had you booked seats in business class and were you actually transported in economy class? If travellers are moved to a lower class than the one booked, they may be entitled to a pro rata refund of the ticket price in accordance with the EU Passenger Rights Regulation. Contractual claims may also exist.

Amount of repayment on downgrade

The amount of the refund depends on the flight distance:

up to 1.500 km 30%

30 % of the airfare for flights of 1,500 km or less

1.500 km to 3.500 km 50%

50 % of the fare for flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km and for all intra-Community flights of more than 1,500 km (with the exception of flights between the European territory of the Member States and the French overseas departments)

more than 3.500 km 75%

75 % of the fare for all other flights over a distance of more than 3,500 km

For the calculation of the refund, only the proportionate fare for the segment concerned, excluding taxes and fees, is to be taken into account.

Note

Whether a claim actually exists in your case depends on the specific individual case. The presentation of rights is only an initial overview and does not claim to be exhaustive.
A comprehensive presentation of air passenger rights can be found on the website of the European Union.
